The Supreme Court has determined that the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill is in accordance with the Constitution, Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament.
The Supreme Court had earlier considered a petition filed against the Bill and having considered the submissions, by counsel for the petitioner and the Attorney General's Department, the Court had taken the view that there is no material for the Court to conclude that any of the Provisions of this Bill violates any Provision of the Constitution,
Since Court formed that opinion, the same was indicated to the Counsel in Open Court, Thereafter, Counsel for the Petitioner having obtained instructions from his client (Petitioner), informed Court that in the above circumstances, the Petitioner will not further proceed with this Petition and hence will withdraw this Petition.
As such, the Court allowed the Petitioner to withdraw the Petition and terminate further proceedings, moving to dismiss the Petition.
