SJB and SLPP call for applications from prospective candidates of LG polls

Two of the leading political parties – the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna have stepped up their preparations for possible Local Government elections by calling for applications from prospective candidates.

Both, the SLPP and SJB advertised this week for persons interested In contesting elections to send in their applications.

The SJB at its party convention held on Sunday at Campbell Park distributed a printed newspaper which includes its application and has made available its email address and postal address to send applications.

The Application has asked for the name, permanent address, date of birth, phone numbers, district, Local Government institution and the polling division, electorate, educational and other qualifications, Political activities and social activities.

The SJB has set January 10, 2023 as the deadline.

The SJB at its convention declared that it was fully prepared for the local polls.

The SLPP in a full page advertisement on Sunday said it was calling for applications from youth, women, social leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs to come forward to contest.

The party has called to send applications by registered post to its headquarters No 1316, Nelum Mawatha, Jayanthipura, Battaramulla.

Party General Secretary, Sagara Kariyawasam told Timesonline that they were making the preparations under the guidelines of Basil Rajapaksa.

He said Mr Rajapaksa has instructed to get down district leaders of six districts each for a meeting in Colombo.

However, he said the SLPP position is that if the government wants to delay elections either due to the economic or other reason the SLPP will support that view.

Meanwhile the SLFP had called for applications earlier from prospective candidates.

The Elections Commission is due to call for nominations later this month.
