A Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member today was elected as the Mayor for Kurunegala replacing a SLPP member who was removed from the position for the failure to pass the annual budget of the Council.
Mr Sumedha Aruna Shantha was elected with a majority vote at the Council meeting today.
Mr Shantha was elected as the Mayor with 10 votes while his oponent WiJayananda Wedisinghe of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) obtained six votes. Therefore the SJB member Mr shantha was elected as mayor as he won the election by four votes in favor.
Earlier the Mayor of Kurunegala, Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana was absent at the voting. He was removed from his post by way of a special Gazette notification on the grounds of his inability to pass the budget of the Municipal Council for 2023.
The Gazette was issued by the Governor of the North Western Province, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, by virtue of powers vested in him under Section 326 (1) of Municipal Council Ordinance Chapter 252 to be read with Section 2 of Provincial Council (Incidental Provisions) Act, No. 12 of 1989.The removal came into effect from December 31, 2022.Temporarily the powers were handed over to the Deputy Mayor until the new Mayor was elected.
