The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) says it has settled the outstanding electricity bill amounting to Rs. 4.1 million of the Mihantale Raja Maha Viharaya complex.
Issuing a statement, the office of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the bill has been settled through contributions made by SJB members and donors.
The statement noted that the SJB took measures to settle the bill just two days after Mr Premadasa met with the Chief Incumbent of the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya to discuss the situation after the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) disconnected power to the temple owing to the unpaid electricity bill amounting to Rs. 4,1 million.
The statement by the Opposition Leader's office also criticised the government for placing a massive electricity burden on the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, stating that it had caused enormous difficulties for both monks at the temple complex and devotees who visit it.
