Efforts have been made to set up a housing project solely for expatriate workers, says the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara.
This housing project is to be put into effect cooperatively by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Housing Development Authority as urban condominiums and rural single housing units in line with the needs of expatriate workers, as reported by the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment.
A discussion regarding this was held yesterday (May 16) with the participation of the State Minister of Urban and Housing Development, Thenuka Vidanagamage.
In the course of the meeting, a decision was reached to initiate a survey concerning the housing needs of expatriate workers from next Monday (May 22) onwards.
The particulars are expected to be possible within two weeks and the survey is intended to be conducted through the development officers designated to all the Divisional Secretariats, Sri Lankan foreign missions and via the official website of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.
The Foreign Employment Ministry also mentioned that after evaluating the data extracted from the survey that was set forth aimed at expatriate workers and their family members, the total and types of houses that will be built up and the areas where the houses will be built will be determined.
Henceforth, the construction work of the housing project will be followed out on specific lands owned by the Housing Development Authority plus the Government.
Besides, Hilmi Aziz, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, Rajeev Sooriyarachchi, Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority and other relevant officers also took part in the meeting.
