In view of the ban on May Day rallies owing to a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Free Trade Zone and General Services Trade Union has decided to symbolically celebrate May Day via an online social media platform on May 1 at 10am.
Its Joint Secretary Anton Marcus noted that in this respect, as a responsible union “we are not willing to neglect our responsibilities and have decided not to conduct the long-established May Day rally and demonstrations of our union.”
He noted that despite requests to vaccinate the export sector workers this was not taken into consideration under the national vaccination programme to prevent COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, he pointed out that many industries in the export manufacturing sector including the apparel industry either had to shut down its operations or quarantine a large number of their workers during the past few months. (SD)
