Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in Western,Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Northwestern provinces and in Mannar, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts today (26) evening or night.
Issuing an advisory for severe lightning, the Meteorology Department said fairly heavy showers are possible at the above places.
“There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. Public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning,” the Department said.
“Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. Beware of fallen trees and power lines,” the warning said.
Several deaths from lightning strikes were reported yesterday and Monday. Public is requested to avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
A gale-force wind caused chaos in many areas in Puttalam district on Tuesday. Over 25 houses and farms, buildings in Anamaduwa, Puttalam, Pallama Nawagattegama sustained damages from strong winds.
Farmers were lamenting over the losses incurred by the unexpected stormy condition.
