Sixth China-Sri Lanka Joint Workshop on Monsoon Climate and Marine Environmental Resources

On the invitation of China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research, the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, Priyangika Dharmasena, gave a speech at the 6th China-Sri Lanka Joint Workshop on Monsoon Climate and Marine Environmental Resources, held virtually on March 9, 2021.

Sri Lankan Scholars and officials attached to the university of Ruhuna, National Aquatic Resources, Research and Development Agency, Department of Meteorology  and Chinese academics  from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Universities of Western Australia, Malaya, participated at the workshops, which consisted of speeches, presentations and questions and answers sessions. The presentations comprised of environmental and marine research pertaining to Sri Lanka.

Consul General in her address said that conducting such workshops regularly will help to ‘find solutions’ to important areas of global interest and to ‘update our knowledge on the changes taking place in our environment.” The Consul General further mentioned the need to strengthen capacities to address unforeseen environmental pollution occurrences which can take place in our surroundings and recalled the incident of the fuel leakage from the MT Diamond in the Sri Lankan East coast, which was averted but can be considered as an eye opener to withstand any such future incident.

Among those who addressed the gathering were Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, Prof. Sujeewa  Amarasena, , Director General of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Prof. Lijuan Long, newly appointed Director Prof. Changsheng Zhang, and Co-Directors of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research, Prof. Tilak P.D.Gamage.
