Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has been appointed to head a committee to look into the unruly behaviour of several MPs within Parliament premises.
Other members of the committee include Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, Susil Premjayantha, Bandula Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and MPs Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Gayantha Karunathilake, Rauff Hakeem, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Vijitha Herath and M.A. Sumanthiran.
The committee appointed by the Speaker is to submit a report on the observations made.
Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya today (8) attended Parliament following an assurance given by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on the safety of opposition MPs.
Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said if the House fails to investigate the alleged assault attempt on MP Manusha Nanayakkara by ruling party MPs, the incident will be taken to the Supreme Court.
Kiriella said he has also written to the Inter Parliamentary Union, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians.
