Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today informed Parliament that he has received the resignation letter of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mayantha Dissanayake from the post of Chairman of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF).
A meeting of Parliament's Committee of Selection will be held on April 4 to appoint a new Chairman for COPF, the Speaker further announced.
Mr Dissanayake was recently appointed as Chairman of COPF. However, opposition parties charged that his name had been proposed by the government though Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella had earlier proposed SJB MP Dr Harsha De Silva as the opposition's nominee to Chair COPF.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
