A proposal by the Sri Lanka Tourism to grant permission to allow registered tourist establishments, including hotels and restaurants with liquor licenses, to serve liquor on Christmas day has been criticised by the Catholic church.
The proposal had been made by the Chairperson of Sri Lanka Tourism Kimarli Fernando to the Tourism Ministry.
The Chairperson had pointed out in 2019 a similar approval had been granted and that in 2020 approval had not been sought due to the COVID19 situation.
The proposal had been submitted by the Tourism Ministry to the Finance Ministry.
However, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday (12) criticised the move saying that if serving of liquor is banned on Vesak days it should be a similar situation on Christmas day.
