Sri Lanka has agreed to achieve carbon Neutrality (zero carbon footprint) by the year 2050.
As a party to the Paris Agreement Sri Lanka has agreed to the task through the updated Nationally Determined Contribution submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the cabinet was informed.
Accordingly, extensive consultations have been conducted with the relevant stakeholders in order to reach that goal of removing the CO2 released into the atmosphere by various means leaving a zero balance.
Therefore a team of experts has identified potential measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase of carbon sequestration needed to become a carbon neutral country and prepared the Carbon Net Zero - 2050 Roadmap and Strategic Plan.
The Cabinet had approved the proposal made by Minister Environment, Keheliya Rambukwella to implement Roadmap and Strategic Plan.
