SL to develop electronic navigation charts to enhance revenue

News

Sri Lanka plans to develop electronic navigation charts (ENCs) that could generate approximately $200 million annually from ships passing near the country’s waters, State Minister of Defense Premitha Bandara Tennekoon said on Friday (24).

State Minister Tennakoon announced plans to amend the national hydrology act, with the UK hydrographic office managing existing nautical charts.

Thereby, the responsibility of creating ENC will be handed over to the Navy in the future, he announced.

The State Minister plans to revitalize the national hydrological office to capitalize on the 45,000 annual ships passing near Sri Lanka, focusing on the creation of ENCs.
