In a protest against the use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse their protest march in Colombo yesterday (26), the teacher-principal trade unions are carrying out their strike action today (27).
Trade union members protested near Colombo Fort Railway Station, causing police to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse them near the Lotus Roundabout.
All teachers and principals will report sick and not report to work today, according to Ceylon Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin.
Meanwhile, all government schools will operate as usual today (27), the Ministry of Education declared, in spite of the ongoing strike.
It has been observed that the strike has caused significant disruptions in educational activities across the country.
Most of the schools had extremely low attendance rates, and children who were present were forced to leave because they were not allowed inside.
