Sri Lankan Government Approves Plan to Settle Statutory Allowance Arrears

News

In a crucial move to address longstanding financial disputes, the Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has approved a plan to settle arrears of statutory allowances for employees of the Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation, Janatha Estate Development Board, and Elkaduwa Plantation Company Limited.

The decision comes as over 2,000 cases related to unpaid statutory allowances are currently being heard in courts. Due to insufficient earnings from these institutions to cover the arrears, the government has decided to provide necessary funds through a Treasury loan. This loan will be repaid in installments from the earnings of the respective institutions.

Under the proposal presented by the Hon. President, funds will be allocated from the Treasury to settle the arrears, and the Commissioner General of Labor will oversee the reduction of surcharge payments in line with the Employees Provident Fund Act No. 15 of 1958. This measure ensures the financial obligations are met without imposing further financial strain on the institutions involved.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial difficulties faced by employees and restore stability within the plantation sector, reflecting the government's commitment to resolving labor disputes and improving working conditions.
