Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Wasantha Mudalige and leader of the Sri Jayawardenapura University’s Student Union Amila Sandeepa have been remanded till August 11 by Kaduwela Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake today (6).
They were arrested on charges of causing critical injuries to the Officer in Charge of the Maharagama Police and damaging public property during a protest near Parliament complex this week.
They were arrested by Thalangama police yesterday (5).
Earlier, Frontline Socialist Party’s administrative secretary Koswattage Chameera Niroshan Perera and member of the People’s Movement for Free Education Koshila Hansamali Perera were arrested by Thalangama police for causing destruction to public property, violating quarantine rules and causing severe injuries to police officers in this week's protest near Parliament premises. They too were ordered to be remanded till August 11.
Maharagama OIC Chief Inspector H.H. Janakantha had to undergo three hours of surgery after three of his fingers amputated when student activists toppled police barricades.
