Police have arrested a 28-year-old suspect from Mattakkuliya on charges of subjecting his child to cruelty.
Investigations were launched based on a complaint made by the victim's grandmother to the Women and Child Bureau on July 12. Police arrested the suspect yesterday (18) on charges of subjecting his daughter, aged 4 years and 11 months to cruelty.
There had been a long-standing dispute between the suspect and his wife and she had left for overseas five months ago leaving the victim in the care of the child's grandmother.
About two months later however, the suspect had forcibly taken away the victim to his house and had assaulted her and subjected her to cruelty. He had videoed the abuse and had sent the clips to his wife, police investigations have found.
The victim has been produced for a medical examination while the suspect is due to be produced before the Aluthkade No.6 Magistrate's Court today (19). The Women and Child Bureau is conducting further investigations.
