Two businessmen who tried to evade paying duty and under valuing laptops, mobile phones and liquor have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today, Police said.
They were carrying with them goods with a value of Rs 15 million.
One of them was a 42 year old businessman from Udammita, Ja-Ela and the other a 41 year old businessman from Negombo. They were returning from Dubai.
They were carrying used 20 laptops, 15 new laptops, 15 iPhones and 21 Whisky bottles.
CID investigations reveled that they had paid duty only for the 20 used laptops.
The two suspects were produced before the Negombo Magistrate courts and remanded until June 14.
The court ordered the CID to investigate if any Customs officials were involved in the fraud and report back to courts.
