Two persons with monkeypox virus were detected in the country, Director General of Health Dr. Asela Gunawardena said.
A 25 year old woman and her new born daughter who arrived in the country from Dubai were detected with the virus and have been admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) for treatment.
Dr. Gunawardena said the woman and her baby have contracted the virus from her husband based in Dubai, who had recently recovered from monkeypox.
The two cases were detected after the duo visited a private hospital in Colombo seeking treatment for the symptoms of the virus.
According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is a disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, although less severe.
