Two policemen have been interdicted after a suspect taken into custody reportedly committed suicide inside the cell at the Panamure police station early today (17).
The 38-year-old man, a father of three, of Welipotha area in Panamure had been taken into custody last night after his daughter had lodged a complaint that she was assaulted.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya today raised the issue in Parliament.
However Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara responding to the allegations said that the suspect was a drug addict and had hung himself making use of his shirt and a wire.
The villagers surrounded the police station today morning and held a protest over the death.
