Udayanga Weeratunga who served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia was remanded until 17 January by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today.
He was arrested earlier today after allegedly assaulting his neighbour.
The United States in December imposed sanctions on Mr Weeratunga, for his involvement in “significant corruption”. He was accused of benefiting from a corrupt scheme involving the procurement of MiG aircraft for the Sri Lankan Air Force.
He was also involved in promoting Ukrainian tourists to visit Sri Lanka during the previous administration.
