Vouchers to buy sanitary towels for school girls

As a new initiative, free gift vouchers for the purchase of sanitary napkins for adult schoolgirls will be made available starting in 2024, under the direction of Dr. Susil Premajayantha, the Minister of Education.

For this aim, one billion rupees has been set aside. Today, June 6, marked the launch of the gift voucher programme at Nawala President Girls’ College.

The goal of the Ministry of Education’s sanitation programme is to provide amenities that support kids’ healthy growth and personality development, as these are crucial components of preserving the teaching-learning process in classrooms.

It is anticipated that this will promote school girls’ attendance at school and avert unfavorable circumstances, such as inadequate attention to education as a result of issues and health ignorance they encounter during their menstrual period.

The Ministry of Education has taken steps to offer all provincial schools serving all of Sri Lanka’s student population as well as the seven national schools that fall under the estate school category a free gift voucher for the purchase of sanitary napkins for six months, beginning in June 2024.

A gift voucher worth Rs. 1200.00 will thus be provided to one school girl, and the Ministry of Education has already set up the required procedures to deliver the vouchers  to the pupils through schools.

This gift voucher can be used at any Ministry of Education-registered retailer to purchase sanitary napkins.

Students are responsible for purchasing sanitary napkins that have been deemed hygienic by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute.

School girls will therefore receive a gift voucher that is divided into two sections as part A and B. The worth of each is Rs. 600.00.

The ‘A’component should be used first, and its validity time is from 10.06.2024 to 10.07.2024.

‘B’, the other component, is usable from September 1, 2024, until September 30, 2024 and must be purchased during the respective periods.
