A woman in Kebeithigollewa, pushed two of her children with disabilities into a well and attempted to take her own life by jumping into it, Police reported today.
The 21 year old elder child with a disability drowned while the other child and the mother were rescued after they were found hanging on to a rock stone inside the well on Sunday , Police said.
Both, the nine year old child and 48 year old mother were first rushed to the Kebithigollewa hospital and thereafter transferred to the Anuradhapura hospital.
The second child rescued had a disability of hearing and speaking.
Police said, initial investigation had revealed that the mother was disturbed about the lack of funds to treat the two children.
The husband, working in the Civil Defence Force had been away at work and on return found the wife and children missinng. He had checked sourronding area and found them inside the well.
Meanwhile Police said there has been a series of similar incidents in the recent weeks. On Saturday a woman pushed her 18 month old daughter into a shrimp tank in Udappuwa, but the child was rescued.
