Minneriya Police have commenced investigations into the death of a 23-year-old woman who allegedly passed away after drinking a medicinal concoction given by a woman who maintained a Devalaya.
Police commenced the probe yesterday (10) after being informed that the deceased, a resident of Diyakapilla, Sigiriya, had died after admission to the Jayanthipura Hospital, allegedly after drinking a medicinal concoction given to her at a Devalaya.
Initial investigations have revealed that the deceased had gone with her mother to a Devalaya in Giritale. The young woman had not been able to conceive children and had sought treatment from the woman who maintained the Devalaya as she also posed as an Ayurvedic physician.
The deceased had been given a medicinal concoction that was supposed to be a purging medicine by the woman and had been drinking it for three days when she suddenly collapsed. She passed away after being admitted to the Jayanthipura Hospital.
The cause of death is yet to be determined and her remains are currently being kept at the morgue of the Polonnaruwa Hospital pending magisterial and postmortem inquiries.
