Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Sunil Handunnetti today (23) asked the Speaker to allow officials from the Attorney General's Department to attend COPE sessions as observers.
He made the request when presenting COPE's third report to the current Parliament.
Mr Handunnetti stated that allowing AG's Department officials to observe COPE sessions would pave the way for them to initiate directly legal action against offenders instead of having to depend on agencies such as the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) or the Bribery Commission to investigate the same matters first. He pointed out that the practice of allowing AG's Department officials to observe proceedings of such committees was in effect in countries such as Pakistan.
He urged the Speaker to discuss the matter with the AG's Department and allow their officials to observe COPE proceedings.
Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri said the COPE Chairman's proposal was an important one and that it would be referred to the Speaker for necessary action.
COPE's third report has investigated 23 State institutions during the period from March 1, 2018 to October 26, 2018.
