A protest was held during the early hours of today (03) in the Puttalam town against the transporting of garbage from Colombo to the Aruwakkalu garbage dump.
During this protest organised by the ‘Organization for a Clean Puttalam’ a group of around 500 gathered at dawn along the Puttalam lagoon area and began jeering at the tipper vehicles transporting garbage to Aruwakkalu.
Personnel from several police stations were deployed at the Puttalam lagoon coastal area due to this protest. According to media reports, the Police riot control squad too was deployed at the site of the protest.
Special security had been provided from Mundalama to tipper vehicles transporting garbage from Colombo to the Aruwakkalu garbage dump.
Police and the Sri Lanka Army were involved in providing these security measures.
