Under-fire Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran informed the Monetary Board on Friday that he was not seeking re-appointment as Governor when his term ends on Thursday, June 30 “until the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises makes its findings known on issues related to the issuance of Treasury Bonds in the years 2015 and 2016”.
Mr. Mahendran’s announcement at the board was conveyed to the media by the bank’s Information Department. Opposition to Mr. Mahendran's planned re-appointment has been growing in recent weeks over tainted bond issues plus the fact that he is a Singapore citizen and has an obligation to Singaporean laws and not the Sri Lankan Constitution.
