The Bribery Commission filed indictments against two state officials including the President's former Chief-of-Staff at the Special High Court over a bribery case today (Jun 20).
Charges were filed aginst former chief -of-staff Kusumdasa Mahanama, and former State Timber Corporation Chairman P. Dissanayake under 24 counts. The Bribery Commission has named 46 individuals as witnesses in the case.
Last week, the Chief Justice permitted the Commission to file charges against the suspsects at the Special High Court. Until then, the case was being heard at the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
The officials have been accused of obtaining a bribe of Rs 20 million to assist a businessman in accquiring some machinery and buildings of the Kantale Sugar factory.
They are alleged to have demanded a bribe of Rs 540 million before reducing the value upto Rs 100 million after negotiations between both parties. A complaint in this regard had been filed at the Bribery Commission by a private sugar company in Colombo.
