Yesterday’s vote on the Second Reading of the Budget signifies that the people are with the Government, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament today.

Speaking during the first day of the Committee Stage Debate of the Budget, Mr Wickremesinghe pointed out that the so-called “Joint Opposition” of Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa could barely must 70 votes during last evening’s vote on the Second Reading.
When the ‘No’ votes cast by the MPs from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are deducted, it only leaves the Joint Opposition with 71 votes, he noted.
“We saw yesterday that a group of 71 were trying to mount a power grab. But the vote showed that the people are with us,” he remarked.
He claimed that the Joint Opposition MPs were now shouting themselves hoarse in order to mask their humiliation after yesterday’s defeat.
