The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has detected 36,000 face masks of inferior quality sold on the pavements in Colombo is raids carried out by the officials.
The masks were being sold in bulk in Pettah and had reportedly been imported from India.
The Health Ministry had earlier warned that the masks could be sold only in pharmacies and they should be properly packed.
The demand for the face masks have been on the rise due to the threat of corona virus spreading.
The persons involved in selling the masks on pavements will be produced in courts.
The CAA also has checked 252 Pharmacies and they found that 19 of them were selling them above the stipulated price. (DW)
