Approval has been granted by the Cabinet of Ministers to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure (Act No.15 of 1979), government media reported.
The proposal to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure was tabled by Minister of Justice Wijayadasa Rajapaksa with the objective of recognizing the right of every person arrested to consult an attorney at law of his choice immediately after the recording of his first statement by the police.
The Amendment also provides If an arrested individual pleads that he or she does not possess necessary means to retain an attorney at law, the amendment also has provision to provide such services by an attorney at law of the Legal Aid Commission.
