Cabinet approval has been granted for a certification programme to ensure the electrical safety of escalators and elevators.
The proposal was put forward by the Minister of Power and Energy, Ravi Karunanayake having taken into consideration the numerous accidents that have been taking place in elevators and lifts owing to faulty power supplies.
Minister Karunanayake had tabled the proposal to introduce a certification system in a bid to ensure the safety standards of lifts and elevators, after having obtained approval from the relevant stakeholders in the industry.
Accordingly buildings in the country which incorporate lifts and elevators would need to obtain an electrical safety certificate.
