Cabinet approves purchase of power from two barge mounted power plants

Cabinet approval has been granted to purchase additional power from two barge mounted power plants in Kerawalapitiya and Galle upon a proposal put forward by the Prime Minister yesterday (May 21).

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had yesterday told cabinet that the ministerial committee which was tasked with formulating short, medium, and long term plans to resolve the power crisis had made a proposal to this effect.

Accordingly, approval was granted to purchase 200 Megawatts (MW) of power from the Kerawalapitiya barge mounted power plant at a cost of Rs 26.20 per electricity unit. The purchase would be made for six months starting from July.

Further, the cabinet also approved the purchase of power from the barge mounted power plant in Galle at a cost of Rs 26.20 per unit. Power would be purchased at this rate for nine months commencing from September.
