Charges were served against State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake today (Jul 30) over a contempt of court case which was heard at the Supreme Court.
Ramanayake has been accused of making derogatory remarks at the Supreme Court judge bench which was appointed to hear the fundamental rights petition challenging the President's decision to dissolve Parliament.
The case is being heard before a Supreme Court judge bench of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, and Justices Vijith Malalgoda, and Murdu Fernando.
After the indictments were handed over President's Counsel, Faiz Mustapha, appearing on behalf of Mr. Ramanayake told the court that the statements in question were not a deliberate one by the respondent and that his client was prepared to apologize for any inconvenience caused to the court.
During today's hearing, the judge bench announced that the case would be taken up for further hearing on December 02.
