A tense situation erupted in Hambantota when protestors gathered outside the China Logistics and Industrial Zone (SLCLIZ) to be set up within the ‘Ruhunu Economic Development Area, which was opened today.
Several persons were injured when the group of protestors clashed in Hambantota, and threw stones at each other.
The clashes took place as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was attending an opening ceremony for the industrial zone near the port city of Hambantota.
According to reports Government supporters armed with clubs first attacked protesters organised by the opposition and led by Buddhist monks in Amabalantota. The protesters responded by throwing rocks.
Several people were seen being taken away in ambulances.
