The Western Development Ministry will introduce a flood warning system worth Rs 1 billion in Colombo, from December this year, a senior official said.
Ministry Secretary, Nihal Rupasinghe, said that the public will receive flood warnings through SMS alerts atleast two hours before a downpour.
He explained that sensors would be installed in several areas including schools to predict flood levels, and that the required data would obtained using a Japanese statellite.
Rupasinghe noted that the signals picked up by the sensors will be monitored every 15 minutes.
