Families of 25 deceased/disabled migrant workers in the Middle East and Malaysia were given Rs 51 million as compensation and salary dues by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera and Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Atukorale yesterday (18), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disbursed Rs 210 million among 143 families as compensation and salary dues during 2015. In addition, Rs 220 million has been disbursed among 124 families at three separate occasions during 2016, according to a media release issued by the Ministry.
These payments were secured in consultation with the Sri Lankan Missions in Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan and Malaysia.
Speaking at the event, Foreign Minister Samaraweera stated that he feels the desperate situation that the family members who missed their loved ones are faced with, and that he honestly believes their losses cannot be erased by providing compensation.
