Persons who have applied for concessionary vehicle permits before the budget will be permitted to purchase vehicles before the end of the year, the Finance Ministry said today.
The permit system was withdrawn in the budget presented to Parliament last week.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka told Timesonline that the permit system was withdrawn to prevent corrupt practices which had taken place regarding duty free permits,
He said in addition the number of vehicles on the roads were too high and the road network cannot accommodate that capacity.
