The High Court has announced that the corruption case filed against Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa will be taken up on August 8.
The Bribery Commission had moved court by arguing that Mr. Weerawansa had allegedly acquired cash and assets worth Rs 75 million through illegal means.
During today’s hearing, Court had been informed that permission has not been granted yet to investigate into the computer systems of certain IT companies who have been named as witnesses in the case.
The Parliamentarian is accused of accumulating these assets between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2014 during his tenure as Minister. The Bribery Commission argues that the accused could not have accumulated a large amount of assets using his salary.
Charges against Mr. Weerawansa have been filed under 39 counts for violating the Bribery Act.
