CPC unions decide against strike action

News

Following the conclusion of discussions held with President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon, Ceylon Petroeleum Corporation (CPC) trade unions today said they have decided not to resort to strike action.

Convener of the Petroleum Joint Trade Union Alliance (PJTUA) D.J. Rajakaruna told the Sunday Times that the President explained to them during the discussion that the Government has included a clause in the Hambantota Port Concession Agreement making it possible to amend the agreement at anytime in future.

Accordingly, President Sirisena assured the unions that he would personally hold discussions with the Chinese firm that the agreement has been signed with, regarding proposals presented by the unions.

As such, Mr. Rajakaruna said unions had decided to keep faith in the assurances made by the President and hold off on any trade union action for now.
