The Customs Department will introduce a digital signature system to prevent irregularities while importing goods.
Customs officials have detected several cases where forged signatures have been used to import banned substances into the country, a spokesman for the Department told Times Online.
Due to this reason, the department will lauch a digital signature that would prevent further forgeries, the spokesman added.
With this system the importer will have to place his signature via a mobile app in order to import goods. This would be followed by an SMS which will be sent by the Customs Department to the user requesting for confirmation.
The confirmation message will contain details pertaining to the imported good thereby assisting in the efforts to prevent illegal imports. This system would come into effect from next month.
