The death toll at the Meethotamulla garbage dump has risen to 10, local media reported. Many more are feared buried under the rubble.
A section of the garbage dump at Meethotamulla yesterday collapsed on residents burying as many as 50 houses. President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the tri-forces immediately to engage in rescue operations.
The injured have been taken to the Colombo National Hospital.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
