The death toll in floods and landslides have increased to 202 with 106 others still listed missing, Co cabinet spokesman Minister Dayasiri Jayaysekara said.
He explained that over 673,722 people are affected by floods, land slides and strong winds. The highest number of people affected were reported from the Matara district.
Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadhrshana Yapa said that that the Disaster Management Center warned the public two days before the floods and landslides occurred.
“Though warnings were given most people were reluctant to leave their houses despite the rising of water and land slides”, he said. He said new laws have to be passed to remove prople from their houses during a disaster.
People who erected houses at floodplains as well as houses built in land slide areas without structure approvals also should be removed”, he said.
