A doctor attached to the Welikada prison was arrested by prison officials yesterday (Dec 24) while attempting to provide liquor to an inmate.
The Prisons Department noted that the doctor was not supposed to report to work yesterday.
It has been revealed that the doctor had provided two bottles of liquor to an inmate who was supposed to hand it over to another inmate.
The Officer of the Welikada Prison said that prison officials had witnessed the manner in which the doctor attempted to hand over the bottles of liquor. He further added that he would report matters pertaining to the incident before courts.
He also said that the relevant measures would be taken after obtaining an account from the prison officials who had reportedly witnessed the incident.
Meanwhile, an employee attached to the Prisons hospital was arrested yesterday (Dec 23) for attempting to smuggle illegal drugs which is reported to have been concealed in 19 pain-killer capsules.
A prison official said the suspect had been engaging in this trade for a very long time.
The suspect has been handed over to the Borella Police for further investigations.
