Bids have been called to expand the duty free area and check-in counters at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Airport and Aviation Services Chairman Dhammika Ranatunga said.
Mr. Ranatunga said that the duty free area which is located on the upper floor of the airport building would be shifted to the ground floor while the check-in counters will be shifted up.
Accordingly, the expansion of both the duty free and the check-in areas will take place across 3000 ft2, the Airport Authorities Chairman noted adding that the project is expected to commence by August.
He said that steps would be taken to upgrade the duty-free area with more stores in a bid to attract tourist arrivals to the country.
