The Elections Secretariat has informed the Election Commission (EC) to take legal action against state media outlets providing biased coverage of presidential candidates.
Government Information Department officials, yesterday (Oct 23) had warned representatives of state media institutions that their news bulletins would come under close scrutiny over the coming days, a senior EC official said.
Failure to take heed of such warnings could result in imprisonment or in being liable to a fine, the official added.
Meanwhile, private media institutions have also been requested to provide a balanced coverage of the candidates contesting for the presidential election on November 16.
