A police constable who accepted a bribe of Rs 3000 has been sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court today (Jan 03).
The order was issued by Colombo High Court judge Gihan Kulatunga when the case was taken up for hearing following a case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery of Corruption (CIABOC).
The constable who was found guilty on all four charges that was filed against him was also ordered to pay Rs 20,000 as penalty.
The suspect had been attached to the Giradurukotte police and was arrested by officials of the CIABOC following which he was produced before courts.
CIABOC officials said the incident had taken place between May 22 - 24 in 2014.

The Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill was passed by a majority of 150 in parliament today. However the opposition MP’s were absent during the voting.
