Heavy winds that hit the Nikaweratiya area in the early morning today (12) had caused extensive damage to nearly 200 houses in five Grama Niladhari divisions.
A senior officer at the Nikaweratiya Divisional Secretariat said the power supply to the area had been interrupted due to the stormy weather condition experienced in the area.
Meanwhile, due to the heavy rainfall, several roads have been blocked due to uprooted trees and broken tree trunks.
Five Grama Niladhari Divisions in Galapitiyagama, Nikaweratiya North, Karakole, Havenpelessa and Budumuttawa in the suburbs have been severely affected by the cyclone. One person died of a heart attack after the incident while another who was injured was hospitalised, and few cattle died due to a falling tree, the secretariat said.
Nikaweratiya Divisional Secretary Ruwan Jayasundara said that they are taking measures to pay compensation for the people affected due to the adverse weather condition.
“Nikaweratiya Police Headquarters, Army, Nikaweratiya Pradeshiya Sabha, Electricity Board, Timber Corporation, other government agencies, voluntary organisations, the general public and all of us are taking steps to provide relief and rehabilitation to the people”, he added.
