The Fisheries Ministry is to introduce e-banking facilities at the Peliyagoda Central fish market complex in wholesale business in order to avoid the usage of cash notes since it is suspected that the notes became the carrier of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the recent outbreak, the Ministry said.
Minister Douglas Devananda who chaired the meeting today on the re-opening of the market while introducing e-banking methods expressed hopes that the market can be reopened for wholesale business in coming weeks after safety steps are in place. Officials of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) also took part in the meeting to share the details of switching into e-banking facilities.
Minister also noted that the fisherfolk community, canned fish manufacturers and fish exporters are facing tremendous difficulties currently due to the closure of the market and assured to take steps urgently to reopen the market.
