Mannar assistant police officer Upul Alawatte was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today (Apr 01) over the abduction of a person who was under police custody in 2008.
Mr. Alawatte was summoned for questioning by the CID before he was arrested today, a senior CID official said adding that CID sleuths are conducting investigations into the abduction of a man who was in custody of the Piliyandala Police.
The assistant police officer is suspected to have been involved in the abduction of Sunanda Kandamby who was arrested by the Piliyandala police on December 31, 2008. Mr. Alawatte had served as the OIC of the Piliyandala Police Division at the time of the abduction.
